Guntur - Vijayawada

This quaint district, will surprise you with its variety of tourist destinations, all unique and spectacular in their own special way.

Undavalli Caves
A short drive away from Guntur and Vijayawada are the Undavalli caves, a striking specimen of Indian rock-cut architecture. The historic caves are located at the top of the high hills overlooking the Krishna River. Built during the 4th-5th century, their structure suggests that they were hewn out of solid rock on the hillside. Dedicated to Anantapadmanabha Swamy and Narasimha Swamy, Undavalli Cave Temples are associated with the Vishnukundina kings.It is also believed that Buddhist monks used these caves as rest houses. A remarkable 5 metre long figure of Vishnu reclining on the serpent couch - Anantasayi is the focal point of the second storey of the Caves Temple. The sculptures are testimony to the dexterity and skill of the artisans of the ancient times.

The caves are located about 8 kms from the RTC Bus stand, in Vijayawada.


Panakala Swamy / Lakshminarasimha Swamy Temple
This temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha(man-lion) and is situated on a hillock at Mangalagiri. Devotees pour "Panakam" (Jaggery water) with a conch into the mouth of the deity. The unique feature of this temple is that the idol actually drinks the panakam and a gurgling sound is heard. However only half is accepted and the remaining half is given back, irrespective of the quantity offered. An annual festival is held in the months of August and September.

The temple is 12 kms away from the RTC Bus Stand at Vijayawada.


Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary
Uppalapadu village is situated in Guntur District, 2 kms away on the Madras Highway and 33 kms from Vijayawada. Look forward to seeing different species of birds, both locally found and migratory ones as well.


Amaravati
Formerly known as Andhra Nagari (Amaravati), this is one of the most important Buddhist sites in the country. Acharya Nagarjuna built India's largest stupa here more than 2000 years ago. Considered to be the most sacred pilgrim centre for Buddhists in South India, Amaravati is 33 km from Vijayawada Haritha Berm Park and the RTC Bus Stand. Amaravati is considered the most sacred pilgrim centre for Buddhists in South India.

Durgi
It is a small village 10 kms from Macharla. A training center to shape the rigid rocks into beautiful shapes and figures. Durgi Stone craft originated here in the 15th century.

Nagarjuna Sagar
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is one of the largest dams built in Asia, located between the cities of Guntur and Hyderabad. It is built on the Krishna River and is one of the earliest hydro-electric projects of India. It was completed in 1966, is 124 meters high and 1 km long, and has 26 crest gates making it the tallest and biggest masonry dam in the world. The dam also creates the third largest man-made lake in the world.

Remains of the 3rd century A.D Buddhist civilization are seen on an island called Nagarjunakonda, in the middle of the reservoir.


NTR Manasa Sarovaram
This beautiful recreation center named after Shri N.T. Rama Rao, and jointly developed by Municipal Corporation, Guntur and VUDA is located 6 kms from Guntur town at Takellapadu. Spread over an area of 55 acres, NTR Manasa Sarovaram is exotically landscaped with flowerbeds, lawns, ponds & small hillocks.

Suryalanka
The Suryalanka Beach is situated at a distance of 9 kilometers from the town of Bapatla, in Guntur district. The natural beauty of the beach and its closeness to the town attracts tourists who often return to the calmness of the sea for the weekend. The shore of the beach is wide and spacious. The Suryalanka Beach overlooks the crystal blue waters of the Bay of Bengal.

Kondaveedu
Kondaveedu is located 25 kms from Guntur. This historical fort was built during the reign of the Reddy Kings around the 10th century A.D. There are 21 stupas in the fort. The ruins of the fort located on the hilltop offer unraveled mysteries to the tourist. A place of natural scenic beauty with natural wonders it is an ideal place for trekking.

Guthikonda Caves
Located near to Karampudi, about 38 kilometers from Narasaraopet, the Guthikonda Caves are set in the midst of thick forest. These caves are one of the most magnificent natural beauties of the region.

Darga
Devotees of all religions from across the country visit Kale Mastan Jonka Darga in Guntur District. A prominent yogi with "Kavali" on his shoulders and just a piece of cloth as his dress. Sandal wood is often supplied by Hindu families for worship. Hence called the sandal feast.

Bhattiprol
During the 5th Century, this village was a capital named "Pratipalapuram". As per the writings of Greek Astronomer Talemy (130 AD) it was the main center for production of clothes and a business center. Many ruins of Buddha Kshetras were found buried here. The village is at a distance of 16 km from Repalle.

Nizampatnam
An ancient region which is at a distance of 26 km from Repalle. This was a harbour before. It was under the reign of Muslims for a long period of time. Some historical remnants of Uppu Mahal which was constructed in that era can be seen even today.

Govada
A century ago it was Govulavada. This village has a rich history of freedom fighters in addition to the religious battles between the Jains, Buddhists and Veerasaivas. This historical village of the 11th century was home to many freedom fighters. Gandhiji had visited this village for collecting Khadi Funds in the year 1929. The region is a fine blend of ancient and modern histories.
