NT Tourism Industry
Tourism is a major industry and employment sector for the Northern Territory.
In 2007-08, 1.394 million people visited the Northern Territory. They stayed for 9.418 million nights and spent over $1.6 billion.
Tourism is estimated to contribute $775.78 million directly in Gross Value Added, or 5.80% to the NT economy. Tourism provides 9,680 jobs directly for Territorians, or 9.45% of total employment, a much higher proportion than the national average (4.69%).
Tourism NT's purpose is to market and influence the development of the Northern Territory as a quality, experiential tourism destination for the continuing benefit of all Territorians.
Tourism NT works closely with the Territory’s two regional tourist associations (Tourism Top End and Tourism Central Australia) which are charged with promoting destinations and attractions once travellers have arrived in the Territory and helping facilitate increasing regional dispersal and length of stay.
